Utes deliver a complete dud at the Coliseum

Coming into this matchup, both USC and Utah were looking to avoid a lot of bad mojo.  To start, a 4-4 record, a two game losing streak and relegation from the middle of the Pac-12 to the bottom.

Utah and USC also shared a lot of questions about who they would be coming into the game?  How would USC handle all their injuries?  How would Utah handle the pressure of a second straight road game especially after coming off a terrible performance at Arizona?

The biggest question for me?  Can Wilson play the game effectively, limit or eliminate turnovers and  get things turned around.

The answer?  A big fat “NO”.

Wilson, aka, the “Gloved One” came out and picked up right where he left off and played his worst game of the season throwing two inceptions and adding a fumble in the first half before being pulled for Adam Schulz who only turned the ball over once.

The Utah offense was abysmal today, only producing 3 points in a game that they “had” to have to turn this season around.

Whittingham came out and stated the obvious twice in his post game comments.  He opened up with his positives:

  1. The defense played a solid game and;
  2. The defense played a solid game.

That was it.  Clearly he was frustrated by the horrific play of the offense which finished with 201 yards of offense 130 of that being in the air.  Nothing worked out there today.  Nothing.

As for Wilson, he looked absolutely shot, dejected and at perhaps the lowest I’ve ever seen him.  His 6 foot 7 frame looked like it had been crushed down to a humble 6’1 at the hands of the USC defense as he threw two more inceptions for a total of 14 this year.

So where to go from here?

According to Trevor Reilly, the goals for this team have changed and for fans it should be the same:  GET TO A BOWL game.

At 4-4, the Utes have four more opportunities to get the two wins needed to qualify.  The schedule is tough however with ASU coming to RES in two weeks, then on the road at Oregon and a solid Washington State before hosting Colorado to close the season.

As for how to get there?  It all starts with Wilson and getting the kid some confidence.

The Utes can’t be successful without him this season.  Cox isn’t coming in anytime soon, I can’t see Whittingham pulling Manning’s red-shirt and Adam Schulz is talented, but he isn’t a spread quarterback and last time I checked, this is Dennis Erickson’s spread system.

Either way, we all have two weeks to think about it.  Oh the pain!!!!
