The Runnin Utes finally get to play someone wearing another jersey. The team has been looking to do this since before their public scrimmage. But, does this game even matter? Can we really learn something from it?
Tony Jones of the Salt Lake Tribune wrote an article on what to watch for. I agree with Tony on his points. However, I would make a few revisions.
1. Point Guards. Based on Brandon Taylor’s 1:1 assist to turnover ratio from last season, he is not a point guard. Taylor should be running around to the open spots around the floor to take advantage of his great shooting. He was the second best three point shooter in the PAC-12 last season. I expect Delon Wright to run the point. The question is who will be the backup point guard.
2. Dallin Bachinski. Yes, I will be watching him. Coach Krystkowiak spoke about Bachinski becoming the junkyard dog type of player. I personally would love to see this happen. Every basketball team needs one. It will be even better if Dallin is that guy because I am all for having the perimeter defenders play more aggressive knowing there is a big man in the paint ready to move on the help defense.
3. How will this team run? As Tony Jones pointed out, the Utes have been talking about running all preseason. I think in the end they will run. But I will be watching for when they choose to run. The most common way teams get on the break are through turnovers or defensive rebounds. I will be looking for whether the Utes run on all opportunities, just one, or are they going to really pick and choose. Also, will the increase in speed cause an increase in turnovers?
