The Curious Case of Calvin Johnson Jr.
Jake Edmonds 06/20/2012Thanks to social media, BYU fans can now follow their favorite team, coaches and players more closely. That is the case with South Carolina running back, Calvin Johnson Jr.
Never before have fans of any particular team been able to follow the recruitment and growth of many individual players this closely. I’m just 24 years old so I hate saying “back in the day”, but when I was relatively younger, I worked as a newspaper boy. That was how most people got news and information about their favorite player or team. Now we can simply click “follow” to get instant and constant updates.
This is how a high school football player from South Carolina has gained so much attention among fans of BYU, located in Provo, Utah. Chances are you may have already heard about Calvin Johnson Jr. CougarNation.com wrote a great article on Tuesday morning introducing the Colleton County High School star running back.
Johnson has already gained 200+ new followers on Twitter in the last week or so (@SpeedKillz_46).
“They’re all amazing people and really love BYU. Its just a big happy family out there and really anywhere,” said Johnson.
Johnson told us that he has no official offers yet from any program, but the CougarNation.com article says he has received interest from Missouri, Temple, Miami and others.
Johnson is a recent member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Here is his story:
“The missionaries came to my house in late November. I had this feeling to let them in and I enjoyed the first session. I invited them back and throughout December they came over like every other day. By this time I was attending church. They asked me the first time about baptism and I said ‘not sure right now’. The second time I said yes to get baptized on January 7th 2012.”
Johnson is also now considering serving an LDS mission.
Rivals.com lists Johnson at 5’8″ 182 lbs. He runs a 4.49 40, benches 330 and squats 460. When asked about his style of running, he compared himself to Emmitt Smith.
