The Week That Was
The past two weeks started with US Open Cup play, giving Real Salt Lake a 2-1 win over Seattle Sounders 2. The team went into the locker room down 1-0 but responded in the second half to continue on in Open play. Goals were provided by Joao Plata and Javier Morales.
Four days later, RSL hosted Sporting Kansas City. The game saw the return to the score sheet of Olmes Garcia. It also opened up the MLS goal scoring account for Sebastian Jaime. RSL stole the 3 points, thanks to the Garcia stoppage time goal, in a 2-1 win.
Real Salt Lake had a game three days later but across the country. They took on the New York Red Bulls, where the hot streak came to an end in a 1-0 loss. The game saw RSL finish most of the 2nd half down two men thanks to red cards to Demar Phillips and Javier Morales.
The two week, action packed, soccer fun-fest came to an end with a home game against Columbus Crew. Without Javier Morales, and a makeshift back line, RSL was able to salvage a point at home. Olmes Garcia and Sebastian Jaime both scored in the game, but a red card late to Jordan Allen put RSL down to 10 men to finish the game.
The Week Ahead
The team continues the US Open Cup action against Portland Timbers at home on July 1st, marking the first time return of Nat Borchers. RSL will hope to continue its good luck in the tournament with a win to keep on advancing.
The team will then stay home for the traditional July 4th game. This year, RSL hosts Orlando City FC for the first time ever. While the team has some well known players and stars, such as Kaka, they have never been to Utah. While some of the players have played here for other teams, it will be interesting to see how the team can react to a new look.
Around The Table
Real Monarchs – After traveling to Seattle and newly formed Arizona United, the Monarchs return home with no points to show. Seattle defeated Real Monarchs 1-0, and then a Darion Copeland goal wasn’t enough, as they dropped points on the road 2-1 to Arizona United.
BYU Soccer – BYU was able to secure a 2-2 tie against FC Tucson but then the next night dropped a result to the same team 3-1. The team then traveled to Las Vegas and was defeated by the Las Vegas Mobsters 2-1 and then 4-0. Their next game is home on July 4th agains the Burlingame Dragons FC.
USWNT – With a win over the top ranked Germany team, the United States Women’s National Team will play in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Championship game on July 5th against the winner of England and Japan.
Sebastian Jaime – When he was first signed, I dubbed him The Hired Gun. While it took a bit longer than we expected, he finally found the back of the net. Against Sporting Kansas City, Jaime was able to get his head on a ball and give RSL a 1-0 lead.
Then something happened that happens to all great players in a slump, he busted out. His entire body language and the style of play shifted. The rest of the game, and following games to suit, he has been a more dangerous player. He is playing smarter. The weight on his shoulder was lifted and now he is different, better player. The type of player that we designated a Designated Player. With Saborio playing in the Gold Cup, expect Jaime to step up in a big way going forward.
