BYU’s Nelson Out For Season?

JimmieChesh 10/01/2012

TornBySports has received information this morning from a source close to the BYU football program that senior quarterback Riley Nelson’s football playing career is over. The source also said that an official announcement from BYU could be made soon.

The injury to Nelson’s back that caused him to sit the entire game against Hawaii, has supposedly been present since the Weber State game and has limited his affectiveness on the field since. According to our source, it has since been determined that it has put an end to Nelson’s college football playing career. If so, 22 year-old Taysom Hill would likely be named the starting quarterback for BYU.

This season, Nelson has a QB rating of 122.8, with 754 passing yards and has completed 58.7% of his passes. He’s thrown five touchdowns and interception each. He has also run the football 36 times for a total of 84 yards. He has failed to find the endzone on the ground this season.

This is either SCOOP or POOP. You’ve definitely got a lot of web hits today either way. We will find out soon…

This could be true since he has cracked vertebrae and can barely get into a car. That info is from his girlfriend.

I am sad for him if that is true, for the injury that is. I have always believed Nelson’s gritty determination could be a huge asset….on Special teams.

      Amen brother.

I feel bad for him. He is so tough and gritty. He has given his best. I love his heart. I wish I loved his performance as much. Get well Riley. You’ll make a difference in whatever you do.

He’s tough and gritty, but he should be on special teams, he can’t throw the ball.

        Amen my brother. Amen.

I’m not sad at all to be honest. It would make Bronco’s job easier, just like Heaps leaving made his job easier. Bronco is an amazing defensive coach but he does not know how to manager quarterbacks.

I believe he scored a running TD against Hawaii when he ran it in from 60+ yards out.

Read the article. He didn’t play against Hawaii.

Yeah…. That was Taysom Hill buddy

  • BYU GUY

There is nothing worse than a career ending injury, it happened to a few of my buddies on the team, but I also know how happy us former BYU players are. Nelson is not the quarterback you want when you have receivers like Hoffman and Apo. It is a shame that those two have the numbers that they do. They are probably the two most athletic receivers that BYU has ever had. Long story short, Riley being done is the best thing that can happen to BYU’s offense this year.

As a person, I feel bad that it ended this way and hope that he heals and can get on with life. I might kill myself if they give him another medical redshirt. As a fan, holy crap what a relief. We must have some angels in the endzone or something. Best of luck Riley.
