BYU Football: Too Early Preview: BYU vs Fresno State

BYU Football vs Fresno State

Will the Bulldogs chase the Cougars out of Provo, or will the Cougars be too much for the Bulldogs?  On November 21st BYU will face old WAC foe Fresno State for the first time since 1998.  Surprisingly enough Fresno St leads the all time series 5-4 and won the last time these teams played.

Last year Fresno St finished the year 6-8 and was 5-3 in conference.  That 5-3 was good enough to win the West division in the Mountain West and give them a shot at the title against Boise St last year.  They gave Boise a good fight in that game losing 14-28.  They played in the Hawai’i Bowl and lost to Rice 6-30.

Fresno returns six starters on Offense.  Last year they averaged 182 yards rushing and 224 yards passing per game.

Last year the Bulldogs found success in conference while playing three Quarterbacks although Connette was more of a wildcat/ running back.  This year it looks like they are going to start true freshmen Chason Vigil.  BYU should be able to take advantage, but this could change by the time BYU plays them.  Zack Greenlee got some play last year and could start as well.

Backs and Receivers

Running back Marteze Waller takes over as a feature back for the Bulldogs.  Last year he split carries with former BYU RB Josh (Juice) Quezada.  Waller rushed for 1368 with 11 touchdowns and his production may go up now that he’s not sharing carries with Juice.

They lose Josh Harper, the number one receiver and 1000 plus yard guy from last year, but return the number two threat in Aaron Peck who had a modest 419 yards.   The receivers behind him will all be inexperienced.  They have downgraded a little bit at receiver for 2015.

The strength of this defense is the Linebackers.  Seniors Kyrie Wilson and Ejiro Ederaine return as big run stoppers with a lot of experience.  The Secondary is going to be better and more experienced than last year, but they lost their top 3 pass rushers and the defensive line will be weaker.

Too Early Prediction

Fresno State is still trying to replace Derek Carr from two years ago at quarterback.  They may find the replacement or have more QB concerns this year.  Either way BYU is the more talented team and will win this game 52-14.  GO COUGARS
